What is a video transcript?
A video transcript is the spoken words of a video written out as text, usually with a timestamp at the start of each line. Instead of scrubbing through a recording to find one quote, you can read, search and copy it in seconds. A good video transcript also doubles as subtitles, show notes, blog content and study material. The W3C Web Accessibility Initiative recommends transcripts for audio and video so people who are deaf or hard of hearing — and anyone who prefers reading — can use the content.
Our video transcript generator does the typing for you. It runs on Whisper, the open-source speech recognition model from OpenAI that was trained on 680,000 hours of multilingual audio. It listens to the audio track, recognizes speech in more than 90 languages and splits it into short, timestamped lines that stay in sync with the video. Play the video, click any line to jump to that moment, and correct a word before you export the final video transcript.
Because the audio is extracted in your browser, the video itself never leaves your device. Only the sound is sent for video transcription, and nothing is stored once your video transcript is ready.
Why make a video transcript?
- Accessibility
- A video transcript and captions make your content usable for viewers who are deaf, hard of hearing or watching with the sound off.
- SEO
- Search engines can't watch a video, but they can read a video transcript published on your page.
- Repurposing
- Turn one video transcript into a blog post, a newsletter, social captions and quotes.
- Research and notes
- Search a video transcript of a lecture, interview or meeting instead of rewatching the whole recording.
Tips for a more accurate video transcript
- 1Use the clearest recording you have — less background noise means fewer mistakes.
- 2Pick the spoken language instead of Auto-detect when a video mixes languages.
- 3For music videos, expect sung lyrics to need more editing than speech.
- 4Read the video transcript once before you export it, and fix names and technical terms.

Questions, answered
How do I get a transcript of a video?
Upload your video or audio file. We extract the audio, transcribe it with AI and show a timestamped video transcript you can edit, copy or download as TXT, SRT, VTT or LRC.
Is this video transcript generator free?
Yes. You can transcribe files up to 30 minutes long for free, with no sign-up.
Can I convert a YouTube video to text?
Link import for YouTube, Instagram and TikTok is coming soon. For now, download the video and upload the file — you get the same video transcript.
How accurate is the transcription?
Accuracy depends on audio quality. Clear speech is transcribed very well; music, heavy background noise or overlapping voices lower accuracy. You can fix any line of the video transcript in the editor before exporting.
Can I edit the video transcript before downloading?
Yes. Click into any line to correct a word, name or punctuation. Your changes are included in every export.
Can I download the transcript as subtitles?
Yes. Export SRT or VTT subtitle files with timestamps, ready for YouTube, Premiere Pro, CapCut or any video player.
What languages are supported?
More than 90 spoken languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean and Chinese. Leave it on Auto-detect or pick the language for best results.
Is my video kept private?
Your video never leaves your device: the audio is extracted in your browser and only the sound is sent for transcription. We don't store your files or your video transcript, and nothing is ever published.
